The wedding commences with an event known as Laghana Lekhan. In this ceremony, a marriage alliance is fixed at the girls house. Here a traditional puja is performed and the time and date of the marriage is fixed. At this point of time, both the families are made aware about the date and time of the wedding.
Lagna Patrika Vachan and Sagai
This event is conducted at the boys house, where the priest reads out the Lagan Patrika Vachan. After this, another important ceremony held at the boys house is Sagai or engagement ceremony, where the couples exchange their rings and a formal announcement is made about the marriage. Here the groom wears a traditional headgear and goes through the century old ritual of puja during the sagai.
On the day of marriage, the guests, known as Baraatis are welcomed by the girls house with an aarti being performed by the female members of the house. The ladies sing the traditional mangala geet.
The baraatis are accompanied by a band with traditional instruments playing in the background. The next important event is performed at the Wedding hall, where the couple exchanges garland. The groom here is presented with a red cloth, while the bride puts a garland on her groom welcoming him and his family to the aarti. The groom, as he enters the mandap, steps on two earthern pots to ward off evil.
The hand joining ceremony or the Hast Milap follows this event. The priest places a cloth garland around the neck of the couple, while the brides parents wash the grooms feet. In addition to this, there are a few other customs that take place inside the mandap.
All Jain Weddings like Hindu Weddings take place inside the mandap. Where the girl is seated on the right side of the groom and Abhisheka or Ashirwad is performed. Here water is sprinkled on the head of the couple and the priest chants mantra and blesses the couple on their new journey ahead.
